EDUC 701 Dynamics of the Equitable Classroom
21st Century Teaching
This video is the first one I checked out. I was so intrigued with the way the students were talking to each other. They were truly engaged and interested in the learning.
In this video, the teachers are having students come up with their own inquiry based questions. The teachers guide students by teaching them how to develop questions and teach them that there are many ways to solve problems. The video leads me to believe that this type of learning can happen at any point of a lesson. In this particular instance they have some background knowledge about the subject.
You can tell the students are learning because they are collaborating with other students. The students are coming up with their own questions based on the knowledge that they already have. They are coming up with solutions to the problems. They are also writing all of the information down on a "lab sheet" to help keep them and their thoughts organized.
The teacher is going around and discussing their problems and solutions with the groups to help guide them. She was questioning the students and their solutions. This is different from "traditional" teaching because the teacher is not up in front giving information, the students are guiding their own learning based on a question given by the teacher. They are working collaboratively in groups.
Fortunately, this example was of a 2nd grade class and I would really like to look into doing more student inquiry based learning.

In this video we see students extending their learning about bees. They read an article about how bee's might become extinct and decided to do something about it. They are extending their learning "outside classroom walls." They are solving real world problems by researching and acting on the issue.
The students are split up into collaborative groups. They are on two teams; a research team and an action team. On the research team they are learning how to determine if sources are reliable and how to read articles. The action teams are working on projects such as gardening, candle making, making brochures, and creating a website to inform people about their research on bees.
In this video their are two teachers utilizing their strengths. The first teacher teaches about how to conduct research and helps the students come up with articles to use. The second teacher helps with the science piece of their research. They both use questioning techniques to help the students guide their learning. This lesson was completely "hands on" for the students which is different from traditional teaching/ learning. Again, in this video the students drive the lesson, not the teacher.
I could potentially use a lesson like this. At my school we do Service Learning Projects and our class is going to be raising money for the Suisun Wildlife Center. I could use some of these practices for these lessons.

This video caught my interest because of the technology piece. This video shows the introduction to technology to first graders by using "Tech buddies."
You know the students are learning because they are creating and executing various tasks. The Tech buddy will teach them how to do certain tasks, such as copy and paste, and they will help them write a story. They are also introducing them to new websites. The teachers will ask "what are things you might need some work on?" or "What is something you are proud of/accomplished?"
The teachers teach the 5th graders how to work with the younger students but overall the teachers are hands off. The older students are the ones doing the teaching. The teacher's help facilitate. Before, teachers would have buddies for younger students but this is taking it to another level. The older students are becoming the teacher and helping the younger students with technology.
After viewing this video, I am 100% going to find a teacher that would like to be our "Tech Buddies." I think this is a great idea to use in the classroom.
